Outrun the Light?

“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.”
Psalms 119:105
• “Don’t outrun your headlights,” a seasoned motorcyclist told me shortly after I learned to ride. I didn’t know what he meant until one pitch-black night as I rode alone. When I finally escaped the lights of town, clouds covered the moon and stars. I strained to see ahead; the headlight didn’t seem to illuminate what I needed to see as the curves rushed toward me. So I slowed down and let the light do its work. Within seconds, I could see the bends and turns more clearly, and travel safely. My growth in the spiritual life seems like and unlike that dark-night experience. God’s Word lights the path I’m on and guides my steps. But it doesn’t show me what’s just beyond the next curve or behind the bushes. It shows me where I am, it shows me the destination, it shows me the kind of heart I ought to have when I arrive. Today, move ahead with the eyes of faith.
