“Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.
For as members of one body you are all called to live in peace.
And always be thankful.”
Colossians 3:15
• My husband’s grandmother rarely completed a conversation without the comment, “Lord, I’m so thankful.” It defied logic that 1951 would find Erma, a young widow with five children, so grateful. True, her husband Louis had provided a home for his family; however, to make ends meet, she had to clean houses for others. In later years, even physical pain failed to diminish her gratitude to her Creator for the health she described as “better than that of some my age.” Her birthday offered an annual excuse for the gathering of her children, fourteen grandchildren, and almost as many great- grandchildren. They returned to the porch that most of them had scampered across as toddlers. Beaming at her family, Erma’s eyes would mist in acknowledgment of blessings received. Five years after her passing, I continue to miss her gentle presence, especially when I find myself moved to whisper, “Lord, I’m so thankful.” Can you find cause for gratitude today?
