“God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
John 4:24
• “Why is Jesus special, Aidan?” his church-school teacher asked. The little boy responded, “It’s ’cause His body is made out of crackers and wine!” Aidan is thinking about the form of Communion, missing its spirit. Of course, he is just a child, but I find I often respond somewhat similarly. I have actually complained in my heart about the Communion wafer, wishing someone would buy a tastier brand! I focus too easily on the type of music, the competency of the worship team, the spelling errors in the bulletin, the colors, or the lights, or . . . When I do this, I’m missing the purpose of worship: to honor and adore the living God. As my minister said recently, “The various worship forms do not enable worship; they only enhance it.” To truly worship, I need to see past the form, and get into the Spirit. Real worship is all about God, not about us.
