“Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor’s house.”
Deuteronomy 5:21
• I received an e-mail from a high school friend now living in Florida. She reported that Hurricane Charley had ripped off a portion of her roof and dumped it into her pool. Remembering our humble beginnings as youths, I could only wonder, Bev has a pool? When she reported that she and her family were safe, I said a brief prayer of thanksgiving to God. But I couldn’t keep my mind off the picture of a teenage Bev now transported to a life of tropical luxury. Today’s paper reports that 3 million people are without electricity in Florida—after another hurricane. I suppose Bev is in that group. I don’t amuse myself now by picturing her in a luxurious home. Instead, I consider why that pool once seemed so important to me. Be thankful when friends do well, caring when they suffer.
