“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. . . .
And here is how to measure it—the greatest love is shown
when people lay down their lives for their friends.”
John 15:9, 13
• “If you love me, then you’ll. . .” Have you been there? It seems we humans want to add conditions to our love, probably because we know, at some deep level, that the essence of love is self- sacrifice. The deeper the love, the more complete the quality of self-giving. How do we know God loves us completely? Meditate on John 15:9–13 for some biblical clues. Then consider your own love-in-return for the Lord. For me, reading through poet Elizabeth Browning’s famous first line helps me get started: How do I love Thee [Lord]? Let me count the ways. . . . Loving the Lord back is a lifetime endeavor.
