Scones with buttermilk or cream

BUTTERMILK SCONES 2 c. all purpose flour (add 1/2 tsp. nutmeg) 2 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 8 tbsp. (1 stick) butter 3/4 (or less) c. buttermilk (add 1 egg yolk) 1/2 c. currants
CREAM SCONES: 2 c. flour 2 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 1/2 c. heavy cream 1/2 c. chopped currants or raisins
Preheat oven to 400°F. Combine ingredients. Knead briefly on a lightly floured board. Press into a circle and cut into wedges or roll out to 1/2-inch thick and cut into 1 1/2-inch rounds. Bake at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes until light brown.
Serve warm with butter or with jam, whipped cream, or marmalade.
May also be baked in electric skillet.
