“We will be confident when we stand before the Lord,
even if our hearts condemn us.
For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.”
1 John 3:19–20
• I’d been raised in a “free church,” where worship was informal and impromptu. Then, some years after marriage, we began attending a liturgical church where worship was pre-planned and perfectly purposeful. Now here’s how this relates to our verse above: I had to work on my confidence in literally standing before the Lord. In my old church, during communion, I’d be served with a little cup of juice as I sat quietly in the pew. In my new church, I had to stand, walk up to the altar rail, and kneel down. Do I dare come? For a long time, I was afraid to take that walk—such a bold statement that God loved me and welcomed me at His family table. I did believe! I believed in my forgiveness and my complete acceptance in Christ. Yet a sense of unworthiness condemned me. My feelings needed to follow my footsteps. Eventually, they did. Keep believing and acting upon your convictions; the feelings will follow.
