Walk Before Running

“You have been faithful in handling this small amount,
so now I will give you many more responsibilities.”
Matthew 25:21
• My toddler squares his tiny shoulders and steps out. His arms flap wildly. He manages one momentous step . . . and then another. But then he tries to walk faster and faster and, in spite of my warnings, breaks into a run—ending up flat on his face in the grass. “Sweetheart, you must learn to walk before you can run,” I say, smiling. But he won’t listen. Little as he is, he scorns mere walking; he wants to race with the wind. He grabs hard at the nearest support—me!—pulls himself up, and he’s off again. I can almost hear a hint of laughter in my Heavenly Father’s voice as He speaks to my heart: “My Daughter, you are like that little one. You, too, want to run before learning to walk; you, too, expect to accomplish great things overnight instead of faithfully carrying out the small tasks I entrust to you.” Faithfulness in little things prepares us to handle the big things.
