“I will drive [my servant] like a peg into a firm place.”
Isaiah 22:23 (NIV)
• Scarred with use, our vintage dresser holds orphaned gloves and hats, both trendy and passé. My great-grandfather planed its oak planks and fashioned each drawer without a single nail. Instead, he carved bull’s-eye dovetails. To bore holes, then peg together hand-cut boards, takes time and skill. The cabinet- makers even carve extra pegs, in case one snaps. These days, such craftsmanship is rare. Chisel, remind me how precisely God fits together the events of our lives, building character, making us stronger. Yet there’s a price for beauty. We may feel like one of those extra pieces that may never be needed. Or like my dresser, we’re stuffed with memories nobody wants. We may seem like square pegs in round holes, but in God’s hands, we are sturdy, cherished, still serviceable: spare pegs becoming well-rounded wholes. drill, sandpaper, hammer—the needed tools Jesus, the Master Carpenter, hones our inner natures.
