“Honor your father and mother.
Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God will give you.”
Exodus 20:12
• Like any child, I had my times of being disrespectful to parents. I once responded to Mom’s “No” with an obstinate, “No means yes, and yes means no!” That earned me some swift correction. In my midlife years, I found this verse in Exodus coming to the forefront of my life. We lived in a beautiful mountainous area in Colorado . . . but Daddy was sick and hurting in Florida. Would we move down to help him through his last few years? Give up our good jobs, load everything up, and determine to serve him? Honor him? Yes, we called the moving company. And it was a tough transition. But how glad I am that I was able to bless Daddy with my time and energy when he needed it most. For me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Honoring our parents means sacrificing for them in our middle age.
