“She asked me this morning if she could gather grain behind the harvesters.
She has been hard at work ever since,
except for a few minutes’ rest over there in the shelter.”
Ruth 2:7
• Telephone calls and the list on my day planner seemed to scream for my attention as I halfheartedly sat down for devotions. But then I found myself immersed in the story of Ruth. Widowed, a poverty-stricken immigrant, Ruth adapted to the customs of a foreign culture and went to glean the leftover grain in a stranger’s field. My thoughts raced ahead of the story, and I wondered if she’d quickly glean the grain so she could retreat to Naomi’s home—or would she work slowly, reliving each disappointment that had brought her there. No, Ruth’s style was persistence. In fact, her performance was noteworthy, for the employed harvesters mentioned it to their boss. Discouragement can attack any of us feeling stressed and overworked. But Ruth provides a wonderful way through: She did what she could, and trusted God with the rest. Take one step at a time.
