“As you endure this divine discipline,
remember that God is treating you as his own children.
Whoever heard of a child who was never disciplined?”
Hebrews 12:7
• Even as a teenager, I liked maintaining certain “daily disciplines”: doing homework right after school, putting skin cream on my face every night, reading my Bible before falling asleep. God calls us to certain habits that will nurture our spiritual growth, and we can choose the ones that work best for us. But another kind of “discipline” God brings to us is His loving correction when we get off track. Here’s where the two disciplines meet: When I’m filling my life with the right habitual practices, I’m less likely to need the divine habitual corrections. Yes, God will use our difficulties to bring growth into our lives: Otherwise we’d never develop patience, perseverance, or a compassionate heart. But why not forgo His painful correction by planning in advance to live a disciplined life? When life is perplexing, cling to the truth that God always desires your highest welfare—even as He corrects you.
