“Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna. . . . He did it to teach you that people need more than bread for their life; real life comes by feeding on every word of the LORD.”
Deuteronomy 8:3
• “Mom! Jezebel’s begging again!” yelled my daughter, Meghan. Without shame, our dog set her plaintive eyes right on Meghan’s sandwich. “Is there any dog food in her dish?” I asked. “I just filled it.” “Let me guess,” I said. “She sniffed at it, then turned up her nose.” Meghan agreed, shaking her head. That’s our dog. She ignores the food that’s good for her to seek half-eaten tidbits from the table. Only when she realizes that her repeated pleading won’t glean a single morsel will she eat what we set out for her. It struck me that Jezebel’s habit sometimes parallels my Christian walk. Instead of feasting on God’s Word, I let other things consume my quiet time. Usually, though, it doesn’t take long for me to recognize that real life doesn’t come in the scraps scrounged from the world’s table. When it comes to knowing God, don’t live a dog’s life anymore.
