Always Wear the Love

“The most important piece of clothing you must wear is love.

• When I was a young associate pastor in a small church, my husband and I would sometimes attend neighborhood picnics and special outings in clown outfits. We loved it when kids would come up and let us paint their faces or listen to the stories our puppets were telling. We always stored our “clown clothes” somewhere in our cluttered attic, usually packed away in a plastic garbage bag. The bag would contain two of everything—wigs of blue hair and orange hair, red-and-white-striped overalls, and monstrously large green shoes. Fun! And yet those clown clothes would have been nothing without the most important thing we could wear to any of those community events: our love for the children and our concern for their spiritual lives. Our silly clothes would often bring a chuckle. But our warm smiles—beaming right into their eyes— would spark something infinitely more wonderful. Clothe yourself in the love of God every morning.
