“The LORD himself will fight for you. You won’t have to lift a finger in your defense!” Exodus 14:14
• No sound in fourth grade held such terror for me as the St. Bernard Elementary dismissal bell. While classmates hustled to depart, my feet moved as though weighted by cinder blocks. Bullies usually waited for me and my brother Sam. Jeering, they’d form a ring around us and then the fists would fly. Although my girlish defense amounted to ineffectual swings, Sam took manful swipes for us both. My brother’s pre-bell instructions never varied: “Take off running, and don’t stop.” Once he engaged our antagonists, he’d give me a shove. I pumped my skinny legs, skirt flying, as though my life depended on their stride. Several decades later I recognize a marked difference between panicked defensive movements and the quiet anticipation of God’s intercession on my behalf. Like it or not, some situations will exceed my span of control. Time to step back and let God be my Defender. Sometimes being still is more difficult than doing battle.
