A Tough Job

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
Matthew 6:12
• When I took on the job of stripping and waxing the church’s nursery-room floors, I was excited, visualizing how beautiful those scuffed floors would soon look. The stripping solution did its work, and I dug into mopping up the sludge. What have I gotten myself into? The floor was a mess! It reminded me of another tough job. When I set out to forgive the man who raped me, I naively thought it would be a quick fix to feeling better. Instead, I uncovered yucky goop. I had to remove layers of false forgiveness. I mopped up forgetting it happened. I poured down the drain pretending rape wasn’t a big deal. And then I had to dump the idea that I was too nice to get angry. With all the junk cleared away, all that remained was my naked heart—only able to forgive because God asked me to do it. When the offense is horrible and forgiveness is hard, hang in there; it will be worth the hard work.
