“LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless.
Surely you will listen to their cries and comfort them.”
Psalm 10:17
• A friend once confessed that she frequently considered ending her life. What could I say that would not sound trite? I am not a counselor, and I didn’t feel qualified to help. “She needs more of You, Father,” I prayed. “Is there any- thing I can say to this hurting woman?” Remembering how God has helped me, I timidly began, “I don’t know if this will help you, but when I felt worthless, God really comforted me with Psalm 139.” I reached for my Bible and read the passage to her over the phone, and then we talked. . . . That is, I listened. About fifteen years later, I was at a Christian women’s retreat with this same friend. I overheard her share with another woman, “If I were going to read only one Bible passage every day, it would be Psalm 139. It comforts me each time I read it.” We don’t need to be counselors to share God’s lifesaving words.
