“Look here, you people who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year.’ What you ought to say is, ‘If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.’ Otherwise, you will be boasting about your own plans,
and all such boasting is evil.”
James 4:13; 4:15–16
• As a little girl, I would often go with Mom when she took my grandmother shopping. I began to notice that my initials, L. W., were always at the top of Granny’s shopping list. I was certain this code was her reminder to buy a surprise for me. Each time we took Granny back to her house, I’d linger so she could give me my surprise. When the surprise gift didn’t appear after several shopping trips, I could stand the suspense no more. “Granny,” I asked, “why do you always write L. W. at the top of your shopping list?” “Well, dear,” she replied, “that stands for ‘Lord willing.’ Before my day begins, I give my plans to the Lord.” I was crest- fallen to hear her explanation. But, through the years, I came to appreciate this special surprise gift: a lesson in putting God first in my life. All our plans need to go through God’s office first.
