Watch Those Words

“May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14
• I’m not proud of it, but in high school, my best friend and I would enter the cafeteria and sit where we could watch each person coming in. We’d huddle together and . . . comment. You might call our stealthy conversations “slice and dice” time. Each kid walking into the room received our dubious assessments—especially the girls. The hair . . . the dress . . . the shoes . . . the makeup. Each “item” was meticulously evaluated, usually to the detriment of our unsuspecting victims. Eventually, though, because I was a Bible-reading teenager, it hit me: no gossiping allowed! Has it hit you yet? The beautiful thing about friendship is that it can be based on pleasing and encouraging words rather than resting on put-downs of others. And that approach is ever so much more satisfying for all involved (including God). Are the words rattling around in your brain pleasing to the Lord?
