“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” Proverbs 17:22
• “How did you like my squash pie?” my mother asked the threshing crew at her dining table. “Good,” the men answered. And several said, “I could eat another piece.” With a twinkle in her eyes, Mother held up an unopened jar of squash. “Guess what I forgot to put in the pie.” She laughed heartily at what she’d done. Mother could have kept quiet and not told the men, for the spices and sugar filling made the pie tasty. She could even have agonized for days about her mistake. But not Mother—she could never pass up the opportunity for a good laugh, even if it was on herself. And she retold the story often. Cultivate the habit of being cheerful amidst all the irritations of daily life.
