“That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,
in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:10
• “I just wish God would take this away,” I said to my husband as I struggled with the pain of my ongoing illness. And why doesn’t He? Yet later, I began to wonder, If this prayer were answered, what would be my next prayer? How about straightening my teeth a bit? Or healing my several mild neuroses? Or what about making me a few inches taller? I suppose there’s no end to the requests we’d make to a vending-machine God who answered our every whim. But would we grow spiritually? Whatever Paul’s particular weakness, he affirms something important: After asking God for relief, if it does not seem to come, we can assume that His glory would be better served by a display of His power in the midst of our weaknesses. To be used by the Lord this way, Paul knew, is a great blessing. Even when we feel like giving up, God has not given up on us.
