“See, I have written your name on my hand.”
Isaiah 49:16
• Our skin burned and oozed for days after my friend Sharon and I scratched boys’ names into each other’s backs with hairpins. We were two very sorry fourteen-year-old girls. The scars lasted quite a while. Several summer tans revealed the name of “Guy” across my shoulders. I don’t recall the name I gouged into Sharon’s back. Maybe she’s even forgotten. However, I do know neither of us married the boys whose names we wore for so long. Have you heard about the Hollywood couple who had each other’s names tattooed onto their bodies? Now they’re divorced. And how about the guy who married Flo—with “Rosie” tattooed on his chest? Vows can be broken. Tattoos can be removed, and scars fade. But God says we are engraved on the palms of His hands. Even though a teen may quickly forget her first love, God promises never to forget us. We are engraved on our Creator’s hands.
