“Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Deuteronomy 6:9
• My four-year-old had drawn with great abandon on our hallway wall. Short arms stretched to their limit to create a masterpiece. As she washed the wall, in my heart I couldn’t much blame her. I never saw a blank sheet of paper that I didn’t wish to fill with color. Growing up, I had adhered to a rule: We do not write in our books. Since then, I’ve learned to make some very rewarding exceptions. When God reveals new understanding to us, what handier place to record those thoughts than in the margin by a Scripture verse? These milestones direct and remind, warn and com- fort us. We can look back at our notes, recall God’s presence, and be encouraged for the future. Write on the walls of your home if you want . . . but write with abandon on the pages of the Word.
