“We work together as partners who belong to God.”
1 Corinthians 3:9
• “Elp! Elp! Elp,” chirps my twenty-month-old grandson. Like a persistent little bird, he keeps calling until he gets his mother’s attention. He’s not in need or in danger. He’s not calling for help. He’s telling his mommy he wants to help. John Henry’s mother allows him to “elp” her even though it creates more work for her. She lets him stand on a chair by the sink to wash dishes. Later she places them in the dish- washer and mops the floor. Because she loves him and values his companionship, my daughter lets her son think he’s helping her. But he is learning how to work through observing her. Someday, the dishes he washes will actually be clean. In the same way, our Father in heaven allows us to “elp” Him. Thankfully, as we observe Jesus, as we talk with Him in prayer, the quality of our work improves! God welcomes our help, not because we are so competent, but because we are His beloved children.
