“Then Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ The men at the table said among themselves, ‘Who does this man think he is, going around forgiving sins?’ And Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’ ”
Luke 7:48–50
• I was forty-nine years old before I found the forgiveness I needed. On the outside, I was a woman who handled everything pragmatically and quickly, while on the inside I hid my feelings of deepest regret and anguish. I did not linger on sadness and would not allow regret or sorrow to permeate my life. At twenty- one I had an abortion—and never stopped to look back. By the age of thirty-eight, I was divorced and had troubles with a teenage daughter who was seriously depressed, and a teenage son involved with drugs and alcohol. I was leading a life of independent, intellectual logic while putting my spiritual needs on the back burner. Finally, I discovered the One who offers complete forgiveness and restoration. The balm that my soul needed so badly came through in a small community church that taught the compassion, love, and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Only through God do we have real life.
