“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Acts 20:35
• I love visiting the old cemetery in North Carolina where so many of my distant relatives are buried. The clapboard Presbyterian church standing there goes back to the late 1700's, and many of the graves hold Revolutionary War veterans. Reading the statements on those stones can be sad or inspiring, but in any case, they are often quite instructive. One epitaph reads like this: What I gave, I have; what I spent, I had; what I kept, I lost. Isn’t it true that the only things we really own are the things we’ve given away? What would it mean for you, then, to loosen your grip on a few favorite possessions? Would it be worth a try to find out if it is, indeed, more blessed to give than to receive? The more we give, the greater our contentment.
