“Be sure that you select as king the man the LORD your God chooses.”
Deuteronomy 17:15
• What kind of king would God allow for Israel? He was to be a fellow citizen, not from a foreign nation. He was not to build large stables full of horses ready for war. He must not take foreign wives nor accumulate lots of gold and silver—all of which could make him vulnerable to ungodly manipulation. A king was to read the Law every day and carefully follow it as he led the people with genuine humility. Most importantly, the people were to choose the man that God chose. As a citizen of a free nation that elects a president every four years, I wonder if any of our presidential candidates would be eligible if we used God’s criteria. Sadly, even ancient Israel did not always get what it hoped for in Saul, David, or Solomon. God’s ruler ship guidelines are wise principles for any voter.
