“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
2 Corinthians 1:3–4
• Sucking my thumb seems to give him security. It doesn’t hap- pen until after my bedtime reading. Once I’m curled up in the dark, the kitten walks up my chest and nestles his furry body on my shoulder. I hold out a thumb, and he takes it in his mouth. Drooling slightly, he sucks quietly until he falls asleep. When I feel the suction lessen, I gently remove my thumb and nod off to sleep myself. It is a wonderful thing to give and receive comfort among God’s creatures. Amazing, as well, to think that I can be the comforting Lord’s hands when I send an encouraging e-mail, stop to listen, or offer a hug to someone whose heart is bro- ken. I can’t meet my kitten’s every need perfectly—nor another human’s needs. But I can offer a helping hand . . . or at least part of one! God’s comfort is all around us, both to give and to receive.
