“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.”
Psalm 139:23
• After moving to another state, I felt super-stressed. My emotions were on fire and far too near the surface. Time and again I walked myself through the 139th Psalm: “Test me and know my thoughts.” In other words, Lord, tell me what’s the matter! One day as I returned home from the grocery store, I locked the garage door and fumbled for my keys to unlock the house. I thought, “My, how I hate to lock and unlock everything.” It hit me: My problem was a fearful sense of insecurity. Then an incident brought the lesson home. Our daughter would often come home late from work, after we’d gone to bed. One morning, I opened the front door to get the newspaper. There was her house key, still in the lock. I laughed aloud, realizing that the important thing wasn’t that she remember to lock the door but that nothing happened— and nothing had. I said, “Thank you, Lord.” It was a beginning. God is working for our good, all the time.
