“History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before.
Nothing under the sun is truly new.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9
• It seems like only a few years ago when my mother-in-law bought us our first microwave oven. She figured we needed to “finally move into the twentieth century.” Now I’ve got a cell phone and a fax machine—and e-mails to answer every day. What a fast-paced, constantly changing world we live in! Sometimes I wonder, Does anything ever stay the same? And yet I know it does. When it comes to the inner life—the essential needs and longings, the motives and goals of us all— these things have always been the same, and will remain so. It is a cause for greater contentment in our days. Within the next apparent crisis, we might pause to wonder, How will this make a difference a year from now? Will I even remember it at all? The undercurrents of your spiritual life flow deeper than the changing, wave-tossed surface.
