Alone Time?

“[Jesus] went higher into the hills alone.”
John 6:15
• I’m struck by how often Jesus chose to be alone. He willingly decided to refresh and renew—by being with Himself. That’s hard for many of us to do, isn’t it? Most of the time, we’d rather “refresh” by gathering a group of good friends and having a good time. But if I gather a few minutes out of this day to be quiet, I will have chosen to live inside my own skin for a while. Will that be a welcome experience? If I rush through my day, my hurried gorging seems natural. If I’m feeling brutalized by deadlines, my coarse bickering with the kids or coworkers appears justified. And if I’ve had “important” work to do all day, then my escape in front of the TV all evening may feel like a deserved retreat. Unless . . . unless I choose instead to be quiet, to be with myself. It’s important to have some quiet time, to listen in on your own soul.
