“God forbid that I should boast about anything
except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 6:14
• Remember the 1977 film Oh, God? The Almighty was played by octogenarian George Burns sporting big glasses and white hair. Though some people may view God as a kindly old grandpa, I think few do. Actually, many women I’ve known carry around with them a sense that God is quite displeased with them. Perhaps for you, God is constantly frowning—never quite satisfied, though you may desperately need a rest from all your efforts at becoming a “better person.” That’s when I take out a fine silver chain with its cross to wear at my neck. And I remember: If this cross were viewed as a giant plus sign, it would ft into this equation: Holiness + Love = Mercy. Surely that is why the person who once courageously befriended that cross can now call out to all of us without judgment: “Come unto me.” Through the cross, God smiles at you.
