“Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.”
Isaiah 50:4
• Sometimes I think awe is like a muscle, atrophied by fast-lane living. Honest awe requires focused attention, which takes time. Amid the relentless bustle of work, leisure, and church activities, we can always alight, however briefly. Even the Psalms use the word selah, thought to mean “a holy pause.” No spare moments? Well, we have to eat. We could start by paying closer attention at mealtimes today, remembering this loaf, or leaf, or berry that we’re chewing was growing once, alive with light, water, sap. It was nurtured by someone. When we swallow it, an extended chain of life becomes part of us, nourishing our minds and bodies. That’s worth a smile, a quietly breathed prayer. And may we remember that whatever time we have, it’s always possible to savor God’s gifts, cherish the moments, and still accomplish all God desires. May God’s presence awaken our senses to all that is sacred in common surroundings.
