“How long, O LORD, must I call for help? But you do not listen!”
Habakkuk 1:2
• I’ve got a tooth that just won’t stop being sore. Ouch! Time to see the dentist. Whenever pain cuts into our lives, we want to find out exactly why. That was the prophet Habakkuk’s initial goal when he began questioning the Lord: “Why are wicked, foreign nations allowed to devastate God’s people?” And, for a long time, God was silent on the issue. But the question of suffering goes deeper: Why does it exist at all, especially in a world God loves? The biblical prophet wrangled with the Almighty about this, too, and received a straightforward answer about the divine plan to set things right—eventually. Habakkuk also learned much about heavenly wisdom, a lesson more valuable than anything else. We know that pain is a bad thing, but it can have some good effects. It can grow our own souls, and even call onlookers to grow in compassion. At the end of time, by God’s power, complete justice will prevail, and suffering will end.
