“This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses,
for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin.
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.
There we will receive his mercy,
and we will find grace to help us when we need it.”
Hebrews 4:14–15
• Since the earliest of times, priests have functioned as “go- betweens,” bringing a reconnect ion where the lines of communication and fellowship have been broken. And, as the author of Hebrews points out, Jesus is the great High Priest because He is perfectly suited to bring us before His Father. When I’m reluctant to approach this Priest, I consider: He is able to “feel my pain,” He has experienced the kinds of trials and temptations I’m experiencing, He is ready to offer me mercy and grace in my time of need—right now. Martin Luther, the priest who launched a church reformation movement centuries ago, began a new chapter with Hebrews 4:14 in his translation of the New Testament, saying, “After pouring wine into our wound, the writer now pours in oil.” Enjoy this soothing salve of a direct and comforting approach to God—through your great High Priest. At any time or place, any woman may lift her requests to God’s throne.
