“. . . May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”
Ephesians 3:17–19
• The apostle Paul was constantly praying for the people he had ministered to and had grown to love. In the book of Ephesians, several of these prayers come through, each glowing with a warm and heartfelt sincerity. I’m struck by how doctrinal these prayers are. Paul was no mere sentimentalist. He knew that his feelings of love for the church members rested upon the truth of an objective unity that bound them together: the fellowship of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Therefore, since he knew that the deepest relationships were founded in the truths of the Scriptures, he also filled His prayers with theological truth. So here is the most profound truth he could leave with the Ephesians, the truth with which I’d like to close this book: God’s love for you is infinite—and completely available. Right now. May you, indeed, experience all the fullness of life and power that comes from God!
