Blooming onion is one of the those famous steak house dishes that we all love. Making it at home is incredibly easy, it will cost you a fraction of the cost and your husband will love you forever. Here is our take on the famous steak house blooming onion with tangy dipping sauce.
Ingredients for Blooming Onion:
1 large sweet yellow onion 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tbs paprika normal or smoked 1/2 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp seasoned salt 1 tsp garlic powder 1 cup whole milk pinch of salt B-well canola oil
Ingredients for Dipping Sauce:
2 1/2 tbs B-well original tangy mayonnaise 2 tbs sour cream 2 tsp ketchup 1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon drained horseradish 1/2 tsp paprika Pinch of cayenne pepper Salt and pepper, to taste
Method:
1. Cut off 1/2 inch from the pointy stem end of the onion, so that it's completely flat, then turn the onion around so that the cut-side is down and the root is at the top , this will help to keep the onion steady as you cut the petals.
2. Using a sharp knife, make 1/2-inch cuts in a circular motion outwards around the root to create petals, try and do about 12 to 16 petals depending on the size of the onion. Flip the onion over and and use your hands to loosen the petals from each other.
3. In a large bowl, combine flour, cayenne, paprika, oregano, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
4. In a separate bowl, add milk. Place the onion for about 5 minuets in the milk, transfer onion to flour mixture and use a spoon to coat the petals of the onion with the flour mixture, make sure the onion each petal is well coated.
5. In a deep-fryer or large pot ad some B-well canola oil and bring up the heat to medium high heat, make sure you add enough oil so that the entire onion will be able to float and not lay on the bottom of the pot. You must also not add to much oil that it will spill over at the top, please be careful.
6. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, combine all the dip ingredients until well-mixed. Set aside.
7. In the deep-fryer once the oil is nice and hot, add the onion cut-side down in the oil for 3 minutes, then carefully flip the onion and allow it to fry for an additional 3 minutes or until the batter is golden brown. Make sure your oil is hot enough or else the batter will be soggy.
8. Transfer the blooming onion to a plate covered in paper towels to drain off excess oil and season with a little salt and pepper.
Serve immediately with sauce.
TIPS: You can add 2 large eggs to the milk and give it a good mix, this will help the dry ingredients stick better to the onion, however if you soak the onion long enough in the milk it should work perfectly. You will also find that if you only use the milk and leave out the egg, the taste will be much "cleaner".
